We also completed a small animert TV spot for the release. The paint you see falling here is the same paint that made up the images for inside the album cover. The photo on the front cover was the mess we made in studio creating these artworks.

HelloComputer created an interactive banner that works with your webcam to see if your mouth can handle the Wimpy Epic XL. Using custom-designed facial recognition software to detect teeth (as opposed to conventional FRS which only picks up the eyes and nose) the banner allows the user to interact using an actual ‘biting’ action.

To dramatise the experience, they threw in a fish-eye lens effect that activated at the precise moment of radial recognition. You can see a video below shot by HelloComputer.

The second interactive banner follows the outdoor and print executions based on the line “A burger to epic for this…”.

Two years ago Fly on the Wall released a documentary feature film on the band. I was interviewed extensively for the movie and featured in it. The movie went to all the film festivals across the globe and received acclaim both in South Africa and abroad.

It’s crazy to think that what we were doing out of creative necessity has been so widely regarded as a cultural movement and a change in the way that South Africa in a post-apartheid era re-evaluated Afrikaans culture.

Forgive them, for they know not what they do: The Fokofpolisiekar Documentary.

Made entirely with Garage Band, iMovie and Photoshop. With a wonderful scene ripped from ‘The Other Guys’.

We were asked to conceptualise a campaign for Wimpy’s new EpicXL burger range. When the agency was invited to taste these new burgers, we noticed that the women felt segregated and were fighting for attention from the men whose interest was buried in their burgers. So, in lieu of the conventional theme of epic battles and heroes, we decided to explore the route of our insight: Epic jealousy.

We created a group of cheerleaders, the Sharon Park Shongololos. These girls became upset because they were no longer as epic as they used to be because of this EpicXL.

We see them perform their ‘hate chant’ against the EpicXL at their local sports ground, but alas, during their big routine, their male lifters are helplessly seduced by the burger, leaving their partners falling to the ground. In the end, we communicated our insight that jealousy makes you nasty and that the EpicXL is in a league of it’s own.

The Billboard execution was inspired by Eric September’s insatiable hunger.

Finally the print has made it’s way up from the opening exhibition of the Verb work which was held down in Cape Town. The exhibition opens at 6pm on Thursday 8th July and runs till the 22nd of July at The Street Store in Greenside. (135/7 Greenway Road)

SOLUTION:
Playing on the the idea that these are the freshest bands and the latest trend of “Go Green”, the concept of an air freshener was used to bring across the “fresh” upcoming bands as well as displaying the names of the bands that will be playing. A die-cut of an air freshener was printed on the flyer with instructions. This can act as a reminder to the party when people hang it in there car.

Regarding the poster the concept was extended through the idea of a scratch and sniff application.

“Ive set a couple of goals for myself over the last couple of years. Not the crazy “5 year i wanna be president plan” kind of goals but more like a wish list. In the beginning i wanted to edit. I got an editing job. Then i wanted to edit a music video. I got to do a couple of vids for some really great bands. My next goal is to do more Ads and then one day when i have gathered enough skill to cut a feature. It was never on my wish list to direct. But over the last year i have been pitching for some songs. All these bands had one person in common. Hunter Kennedy. Hunter and Pierre Greeff run Supra Familia, a small record label. They called me a while back and asked if wanted to do a viral for Jack Parow. The ideas started to come together and it quickly went from viral to music video. I think Zander is a genius. His tunes are heavy on the ear for most people(he swears like a pirate that lost his wooden leg) but still so good and intelligent that no one really cares.

Anyway so we made this video. My first directing job. It was shot in Bellville. When i was in primary school we used to go eat ice cream at burger fair on a Sunday. I lived with Heno and Laudo around the corner for a year an a half. It was fun.

Oh i wanna mention some people on this project that helped out. Annelie Mare busted the producer role with the efficiency of a German train. Zenn van zyl was DOP and Heino Henning did the grade. That guy loves his job so much. What a legend. So many people helped out. thanks everyone!!!”

Prague and protesting go hand in hand. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of The Velvet Revolution on the 17th of November, here are just a few photos of recent protests documented by Chemistry101’s Field Researcher in Prague. The Velvet Revolution is one of the most interesting and important stories of protest and just how loud the voices of the little people can be heard. In this case it caused a complete government overthrow and the end of Communism in the Czech Republic (then Czechoslovakia). Considering it’s only 5 years before the democracy of our own country, we are sure it’s something we as South Africans can all relate too.

From our researcher in the field:

“Second weekend in Prague, proved to be an interesting one indeed. If the people in Prague have a problem then its time for a protest. Confronted with three different protest over a period of three days.

The different ones come out to play this weekend. Displaying outfits and values like I’ve never seen before. First a protest by the students of Prague, for the right to ride the trams free of charge this was met with a TV crew and a one man guitar solo.

More on the interesting side of things is the DNY protest where full grown adults dressed in ninja turtle outfits to kids carrying guns line the streets of Prague. The crowds follow decorated cars blasting a type of music that has never been heard by the human ear until now. Being a protest for the support of underground trance and heavy metal the sounds are more then interesting, ending up with a fight between your eyes and ears as to which is more out of tune. Oh and just to throw another topic on top of that it also includes the protest against all things mainstream – Quite the claim.

Sunday the day of rest, or in Prague the day when all ball hugging tight short wearing cyclist come out to play or should I say, you guessed it protest. This time against the “streets” of Prague,more specifically the fact that there are no bicycle lanes. Now in South Africa I know we have a protests but these are on a different level it becomes an event filled with kids running through the streets with “Go Vegan” painted no their backs, everyone seems to jump on the bandwagon or excuse me “the bicycle” and has their say even if it has nothing to do with the actual protest.

So heres to the free chi tea I got in support of the Indian community while at the DNY cycling festival.
Heres to freedom of speech.
Now get off your soapbox and back to work.”

Educate yourself: THE VELVET REVOLUTION

To create a look and feel for a South African compilation series packaging. Focus was on cost per unit and broad market appeal. The series should appeal to locals and tourists alike. Imagine picking up as a last minute gift in the Airport.

As South Africans we all know what a large number of compilations are available on the market, the majority featuring a bikini or boerewors roll. Chemistry 101 set out to create a simple clean cut package that would appeal to perhaps a slightly higher end target market but in doing so respect the integrity of the artists on the compilation. The spines of the discs are colour coded, creating a muted rainbow effect when stacked on a shelf. White inner trays give emphasis on the graphics and typography. The first edition of the series will be available in music stores shortly.

The artwork also features a custom designed font, which will be available for purchase from Lab Supplies shortly.

This issue is a great representation not only of the people involved in the Fokofpolisiekar phenomenon but also the political history of South Africa. For people considering traveling to this country I strongly suggest a read.

The artwork below are just some prelims and colour ideas.

SOLUTION: To depict freedom, I chose to contradict freedom through the analogy of an instruction manual. The typeface of the logo was designed from scratch. The DPS
carried through the concept of my interpretation of politics being that of child’s play. Posters were created to promote the magazine.

SOLUTION: An educational glow in the dark puppet show was created for children to play during load shedding, teaching them to save electricity. The more electricity the child saves the more time their puppet has in the “power chamber”, which charges their puppet. Won a “Sappi think ahead award”

“Thank you for your subscrpition to the New Black here’s to next years best sellers”

Due to the price per item budget, special attention had to be made to where product highlights were made. For instance printing the cover in grayscale on fibreboard afforded the use of gold foil in the title, etc.

Below is a packshot of the final package, an example of the trading cards created for each band to promote the launch of the product, a cut away of the poster for the live events to promote the launch and an example of a dps from the book.

SOLUTION: This book explores that grey area of what a women keeps in her handbag and what it says about her. Looking at the contents of women’s
handbags, conclusions were drawn about that person. BlackGreyWhite.

Each Shirt was individually numbered and packaged in a a blind box format. So you didn’t know exactly what edition of the series you would get.

I went for a very bright green colour scheme and featured a more street style aesthetic. All illustrations are true vectors.

A highlight of this project was having a special made point of sale unit which feature artwork by The Fortune Foundation and displayed all the t-shirts. Along with the t-shirts was a take-away artist card. The artist card featured the copies of the artwork and a short bio.

As far as I know all of these shirts sold out. So if managed to get your hands on one take a photo and send it too me. Please also include what number of 100 you have and what shop you bought it from. The best 5 photos will receive a special Fortune Foundation goodie bag.

BRIEF: Create a campaign for the FNB Premier Credo sector’s internal training program.

SOLUTION: The fact that every employee has their own responsibilities and these need to be fulfilled before people can work together, flips the saying “there is no I in team” on it’s head and bringing about the idea that there is an “I” in team, and the concept of “TEAM I.” The collateral which enforces this is the “TEAM I” playing cards, creating a sense of belonging to a team and therefore working as a team. The three sided poster reinforces the Credo, the three steps of service and the employee promise. The water cooler is branded as the “water cooler talk tank” creating a team hub.The mugs have the three steps to good service serving as a reminder and finally the wrist bands signify that they have completed this “training” and are now a member of “TEAM I.”

This is the latest artwork I have produced for them. Not in the vein of what we usually do, but with 5 colours to work with I simply had to go techni-colour for all the new-age-indy-kids.

The shirts were available during this years KKNK if I am not mistaken.

SOLUTION: In order to communicate and link the Etana socceRED/foosball culture to bringing new young blood into the insurance industry, the design and concept centered around the merging of student life, soccer culture and insurance. Creating an advert which shows that insurance is not boring but can be exciting and as much a part of their life and their passion for the other things that surround the target market of this magazine.
