Biography of a ‘Bende’ – Annie Klopper

July 18th, 2011 · BOOK DESIGN, CD COVER ARTWORK, ILLUSTRATION, PRESS, PRINT DESIGN, PRINTS, SELF PROMOTION

Since I started work on Fokofpolisiekar some 10 years ago, numerous people have attempted to document the cultural phenomenon surrounding the band. Obviously this has lead to a lot of my work being featured in many different formats. One of the latest and greatest has been the Biography written by Annie Klopper. The book was designed and laid out by my good friends at AMICOLLECTIVE, who were also responsible for awesome cover illustrations, close-ups of which can be seen in the last two frames of this post. The book itself is a great read and the research and writing put into it are amazing. I am really grateful to be recognised along with the band in this story of teenage rebellion and cultural change.

Two years ago Fly on the Wall released a documentary feature film on the band. I was interviewed extensively for the movie and featured in it. The movie went to all the film festivals across the globe and received acclaim both in South Africa and abroad.

It’s crazy to think that what we were doing out of creative necessity has been so widely regarded as a cultural movement and a change in the way that South Africa in a post-apartheid era re-evaluated Afrikaans culture.

29th Birthday Invite Animation

June 27th, 2011 · ANIMATION, ANIMERTS, CAMPAIGN, CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT, EDITING, ILLUSTRATION, MOTION GRAPHICS, SELF PROMOTION

A parody of John St’s parody. My birthday fell during the Cannes Advertising Festival and in the awards silly season in South Africa. I was so inspired by John St’s ‘Pink Ponies’, I decided to make my own version. The thing that was so good about ‘Pink Ponies’ was that it really showed how in advertising we tend to always over sell the projects we do on our awards boards, it’s always a case of ‘it immediately went viral’ or ‘it didn’t just create a new way of looking at things, it created a movement’. I loved the way they parodied it, however their subject matter although clever was hard for me to relate to, so I made mine about what most 29 year olds with a fear of getting old do on their birthday. Getting hammered.

Made entirely with Garage Band, iMovie and Photoshop. With a wonderful scene ripped from ‘The Other Guys’.

Wimpy ‘Cheerleaders’ 40″ TVC

June 27th, 2011 · ADVERTISING, CAMPAIGN, CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT, TV COMMERCIAL

Director:Amy Alais – Ola! Films

Agency:
MetropolitanRepublic
Executive Creative Director: Paul Warner
Creative Director: Wesley Phelen, Spike Kunene
Art Director: Matt Edwards, Jacques Gross
Copywriter: David Everson, Spike Kunene

We were asked to conceptualise a campaign for Wimpy’s new EpicXL burger range. When the agency was invited to taste these new burgers, we noticed that the women felt segregated and were fighting for attention from the men whose interest was buried in their burgers. So, in lieu of the conventional theme of epic battles and heroes, we decided to explore the route of our insight: Epic jealousy.

We created a group of cheerleaders, the Sharon Park Shongololos. These girls became upset because they were no longer as epic as they used to be because of this EpicXL.

We see them perform their ‘hate chant’ against the EpicXL at their local sports ground, but alas, during their big routine, their male lifters are helplessly seduced by the burger, leaving their partners falling to the ground. In the end, we communicated our insight that jealousy makes you nasty and that the EpicXL is in a league of it’s own.
